Goals

Main goals:

To characterize the nutritional status of the elderly (>64 years old) living in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira), by sex, 5-year age groups and geographic regions (7 NUTS II), both in the community and in elderly residential homes;

To identify and characterize malnutrition-associated variables in elderly (>64 years old) living in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira), by sex, 5-year age groups and geographic regions (7 NUTS II), both in the community and in elderly residential homes;

To develop an electronic surveillance system (screening, diagnosis and intervention) of the elderly’s nutritional status, including undernutrition and obesity, at primary care health units and elderly residential homes.

 

Secondary goals:

To characterize and assess nutritional status among the elderly (>64 years old) living in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira), in terms of food intake and dietary patterns.

To characterize socio-demographic, psychosocial and financial variables associated with malnutrition among the elderly (>64 years old) living in Portugal (including Azores and Madeira), both in the community and elderly residential homes;

To develop a malnutrition alert and referral system among the elderly (>64 years old) attending primary care and/or living in elderly residential homes;

To develop a regular electronic monitoring system (annually updated) of underweight and obesity among the elderly, based on healthcare professionals records produced in the usual context of primary care and health monitoring at the elderly residential homes.
